Marshal at Midnight

In my march toward getting all my WIPs tamed, I am excited to say that my Marshal top is done. It looks nothing like the mystery quilt, but, it includes pieces of it, uses Jen Kingwell fabric, and used both Marshal and Midnight at the Oasis (both designed by Jen Kingwell) for inspiration. I am calling it Marshal at Midnight

As I mentioned in another blog post, I decided that I wanted to something different with my sections of Marshal. I had designed a basic layout in my Electric Quilt software and just had to decide how to fill the applique border.

Serendipitously in February, I took a clamshell class from the fabulous Australian quilter, Irene Blanck. I used Irene’s template and methods and decided I’d do clamshell borders rather than the flower and vine applique pattern in Midnight in the Oasis. I alternated my clamshells lights and darks and was very pleased with how the colors are spread around the borders. Because I wanted to get this quilt done, I tried invisible machine applique to complete the clamshell borders. It is very effective, I will definitely use this technique again. Craftsy instructor Beth Ferrer has a wonderful class on invisible machine applique if you have never done it before.

Originally I had planned to put a final floral border around the whole quilt. Ultimately I decided the quilt does not need it. This top will simmer a bit while I decide whether to have it professionally quilted or take on the challenge myself.

Until next time.
